Film: Pulau Plastik

Film: Pulau Plastik
Pulau Plastik, or ‘Plastic Island’, is an in-depth exploration on the extent to which plastic pollution now grips Indonesia, shown through the eyes of three individuals fighting this environmental crisis: Gede Robi, Balinese vocalist of grunge-band Navicula; Tiza Mafira, a young lawyer from Jakarta; and Prigi Arisandi, a biologist and river guard from East Java. Through their unique perspectives, the film sets to expose just how widespread and pervasive plastic pollution is in the world’s largest archipelago, showing how plastics have already entered our food chain and are already impacting our health.
The screening will be introduced by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, and will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Dandhy Laksono.
Dandhy Dwi Laksono is an Indonesian activist, investigative journalist, and filmmaker. He is known for the 2019 documentary film Sexy Killers, which documented the collusion between the political establishment and the coal mining industry responsible for environmental destructions. He is the Founder of a production house, WatchDoc, and has produced multiple controversial documentaries on humanitarian issues.

It was started by founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, an author, speaker and global changemaker in the remote city of Perth, Western Australia. In 2020 an estimated 326 million people from 177 countries took part in Plastic Free July, choosing to refuse single-use plastic and together make a difference. The campaign is delivered globally by the non-profit Plastic Free Foundation which has a vision of a world without plastic waste.
