Live from New York with Amitav Ghosh

In The Nutmeg’s Curse, acclaimed writer Amitav Ghosh shares the tale of how Western colonialism’s conquest and violent exploitation in the Banda Islands, Maluku, is the origin of climate change’s current dynamics. In this session Ghosh will examine the role that colonial history has played in the contemporary climate crisis, Indonesia’s colonial history and the role that spices, such as, nutmeg have played in Indonesia’s national development.

Award-winning Amitav Ghosh became the first English-language writer to receive India’s highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award, in 2018. Born in Calcutta and grew up in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, he holds four honorary doctorates. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages and he has served on the Jury of the Locarno and Venice film festivals.
