In The Nutmeg’s Curse, acclaimed writer Amitav Ghosh shares the tale of how Western colonialism’s conquest and violent exploitation in the Banda Islands, Maluku, is the origin of climate change’s current dynamics. In this session Ghosh will examine the role that colonial history has played in the contemporary climate crisis, Indonesia’s colonial history and the role that spices, such as, nutmeg have played in Indonesia’s national development.
