It’s the jazz birthday bash of the decade! Let’s start off PIJF in style with a 10th Birthday Party at the Rechabite Hall. It’s our opening night, and we’re gathering some of the world’s best jazz talent to herald a major milestone for PIJF.
The Perth International Jazz Festival has been bringing world class jazz music to Perth for a whole decade, and that’s worth celebrating! Our acts have travelled from all corners of the world, bringing their musical diversity to Perth’s shores and your ears. From big bands to Latin Jazz to innovative original works, we’re celebrating everything great that the Perth jazz scene has to offer.

The PIJF 10th Birthday Party will have plenty of food and drink available via the talented chefs at the Rechabite Hall.

We’re also offering you the chance to see all three bands by purchasing just one ticket! Come and join us for PIJF’s birthday extravaganza.

WHAT’S HAPPENING:
6:15pm: Welcome to Country
Join us for the Welcome to Country. We pay our respect to elders past, present and emerging of the Whadjuk Noongar First Nations people.

6:30pm: Vanessa Perica and ANJO Youth Big Band (VIC)
Based in Melbourne, Vanessa Perica is an award-winning, prolific composer/arranger/conductor writing intricate works for large jazz ensembles and big bands. She is joined by the ANJO Youth Big Band, an orchestra made up of the best of the best young jazz musicians from across Australia.

7:45pm: Meretrio with Heinrich von Kalnein (Brazil)
Meretrio continuously searches for new musical paths, delving into Brazilian, European classical and jazz genres. Formed in 2004 in São Paulo, Brazil, the band consists of leader Emiliano Sampaio (guitar and trombone), Gustavo Boni (acoustic and electric bass), and Luis André (drums and percussion). They are joined by saxophone and flute player Heinrich von Kalnein.

9:00pm: We Made A Thing!
In celebration of PIJF”s 10th anniversary of hosting world-class, innovative jazz performers, We Made A Thing! commissions new works for presentation at the Festival, drawing from a diverse group of celebrated Australian jazz composers who do not ordinarily work together. Proudly sponsored by the Australia Council for the Arts, We Made A Thing! gives audiences and musicians alike the chance to witness what happens when unexpected combinations create great things.
