Jon Hunt with WAAPA | Ray Walker Nonet (Double Bill)
Two generations of jazz artistry come together in this special double bill, celebrating both the future and legacy of Western Australian jazz, from the rising jazz stars of tomorrow, nurtured by the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) to the well-honed sounds jazz heavyweight Ray Walker, awarded the title of State Cultural Treasure in 2024.
Opening the evening, WAAPA’s New Orleans Ensemble delivers an infectious dose of traditional jazz, bringing the sounds of Louis Armstrong and the great New Orleans pioneers to life. Led by Ricki Malet and joined by internationally acclaimed Melbourne saxophonist Jon Hunt, this energetic performance is packed with swing, soul and irresistible grooves. A renowned performer, educator and recording artist, Hunt has shared stages with Paul Kelly, Lauryn Hill, Vince Giordano and many more, earning a reputation as one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians.
The second half of the evening features the Ray Walker Nonet, showcasing original compositions by celebrated guitarist and composer Ray Walker. Highlights include a rare performance of The Common Ground Suite, a major work composed more than 30 years ago and recently recorded by the ABC. Performed by an all-star ensemble featuring some of Perth’s finest jazz musicians, this is a unique opportunity to experience a significant piece of WA jazz history brought vividly to life.
From the vibrant traditions of New Orleans to the rich compositional voice of one of WA’s jazz greats, this double bill offers an unforgettable evening of exceptional musicianship and world-class jazz.
The Ray Walker Nonet are: Ray Walker (guitar), Daniel Susnjar (drums), Karl Florisson (bass, Harry Mitchell (piano), Ricki Malet (trumpet), Jeremy Greig (trombone) and Doree Dixon (french horn).
